ADHD & LD Testing
Dr. Shumsky's expertise developed from many years of experience working with students who have Learning Disabilities, or LD and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD. Cases have ranged from mild to extreme.
Learning Disability / ADHD Counseling
Because of his thorough understanding of specific learning disorders and the options available, Dr. Shumsky works with parents trying to decide on a course of treatment for an LD or ADHD student. He can help:
- Advise on the results of previous evaluations
- Recommend further testing, if necessary
- Develop a plan of action to benefit the individual child
- Act as a third-party case manager, monitoring results and recommending adjustments
Boarding School Placement
Many children ages 10-17 benefit from the more structured learning and living environment of a traditional boarding school. Particularly when there are special needs - when a child needs more enrichment, or when a child has been dismissed from another school - boarding schools can provide the opportunity to make a clean break and re-tool.
However, selecting and being admitted to one of the many qualified boarding schools across the country is the equivalent of choosing a college.
Dr. Shumsky maintains professional relationships with the network of boarding schools across the country. His expertise lies in matching the child and his or her needs with the specialties of the institution - and guiding families through the admissions process. He stays involved with schools and families throughout the student's stay.
Neurological Disorder Consulting
Neurological disorders affect children and their developmental, language, motor, organizational and thought skills. In many cases, families have undergone extensive testing and diagnosis, only to become confused by the results and uncertain of where to go next.
Dr. Shumsky has developed a process to thoroughly determine a child's specific condition and design a course of action to help a student reach his or her top potential. Constant research into programs and treatments keeps Dr. Shumsky on the forefront of new alternatives in areas of:
- Autism
- Developmental Delays
- Asperger's Syndrome
Psychiatric & Substance Abuse Center Placement
When a child's emotional problems become severe, residential treatment programs can offer a viable solution. Dr. Shumsky often helps families who have tried other methods to control behaviors or substance abuse problems evaluate programs nationwide and find one that fits their needs.
Dr. Shumsky maintains a thorough knowledge of clinical treatment centers, hospitals, and wilderness programs across the country. He works with parents on making informed decisions, helps the entire family through the transition, and monitors the child's progress as a resident.
Conditions treated through residential programs include:
- Eating Disorders
- Discipline Problems
- Depression
